Challenges of Cardiac Transplants in the MENA
Nov 2023 – May 2024
Cardiac transplantation has advanced significantly worldwide, but unique cultural, economic, and infrastructural challenges persist in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This project reviews the current state of heart transplantation in MENA, highlighting local innovations and comparing outcomes to global standards.
We analyzed recent studies to explore how new technologies—like ex-vivo perfusion and Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs)—are improving patient care in countries such as Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Lebanon. Despite these advances, organ shortages, varying healthcare resources, and cultural factors continue to limit access and success rates.
To move forward, the region needs greater public awareness, standardized protocols, and regional collaboration. Continued innovation and targeted therapies are essential to overcoming barriers and advancing cardiac transplantation across MENA.
